Keep Your Home Cool (and Bills Low) with Energy-Efficient Blinds

Windows are where Irish homes lose most of their heat and gain most of their unwanted summer heat. The right blind measurably changes both.

Two different problems, two different fabrics

Energy efficiency at a window means two opposite things depending on the season, and the fabric that solves one doesn't solve the other.

In winter, you're losing heat outward through cold glass. The answer is trapped air: a honeycomb or thermally backed blind fitted tight to the reveal creates an insulating layer between the room and the glass.

In summer, you're gaining unwanted heat inward through solar radiation. The answer is reflection: a metallised or solar-reflective backing that bounces radiation back out before it's absorbed.

A thick, dark thermal blind in a south-facing window will make the room hotter in July, because dark fabric absorbs solar energy and then re-radiates it into the room. This catches people out constantly.

Winter: the honeycomb argument

Cellular or honeycomb blinds are made of two bonded fabric layers forming sealed air pockets. Air is a poor conductor, so those pockets slow heat transfer through the glass in both directions.

The effect is largest where the glass is worst: single glazing in older Irish housing stock, large picture windows, conservatory glazing, and roof windows. In a well-insulated new build with triple glazing the marginal benefit is smaller.

For the honeycomb to work, it has to be fitted tightly — ideally within the recess with minimal side gaps, or with side channels. A honeycomb blind hanging loose on a face fix loses most of its advantage, because room air circulates freely behind it.

Summer: reflect it before it gets in

A solar-reflective roller has a metallised backing that faces the glass. It reflects a large share of incoming solar radiation straight back out through the window rather than absorbing it.

The difference in a genuinely south-facing room is not subtle. Kitchen extensions with large rear glazing in Meath, Kildare and Wexford routinely hit uncomfortable temperatures by mid-afternoon in summer, and reflective fabric is the cheapest intervention that meaningfully helps.

Critically, reflective fabrics don't have to be dark. Many are light or even white on the room side, so you keep a bright room while cutting the heat — which is the opposite of what most people assume they'll have to accept.

The rooflight is doing most of the damage

In any room with roof glazing, the rooflight is the dominant heat path in both directions. Horizontal and near-horizontal glass gains far more solar heat in summer than a vertical window of the same area, and loses more in winter.

If you're spending money on energy-efficient blinds and you have a rooflight, spend it there first. A solar-reflective roof blind on a south-facing Velux will do more than reflective blinds on three vertical windows.

The same logic applies to conservatories: the roof glazing matters far more than the side glazing, and the side glazing is where most people start.

Habits matter as much as hardware

The best-specified blind in the country does nothing if it's in the wrong position.

In summer, close blinds on the sunny side of the house during the day before the room heats up, and open them in the evening when the outside air is cooler. Chasing the heat after the room is already warm doesn't work.

In winter, do the opposite: open everything during daylight to collect free solar gain, and close everything at dusk to hold it in. Closing blinds at dusk rather than bedtime is a genuinely worthwhile habit in a cold house.

This is the strongest practical argument for motorised blinds with a schedule — not the gadgetry, but that they actually get operated at the right time every day without anyone remembering to do it.

What to specify, by room

South and west-facing living areas and kitchen extensions: solar-reflective roller, light colour on the room side.

North-facing rooms and cold bedrooms: honeycomb pleated or thermally backed roller, fitted tight with minimal side gaps.

Roof windows and conservatory roofs: solar-reflective roof blind, ideally honeycomb.

Older houses with single glazing: honeycomb everywhere, fitted as tightly as possible — this is where the biggest measurable gain is available.

And whatever else you do, close them at dusk in winter.

Do blinds really reduce heating bills?

They reduce heat loss through glass, which is a meaningful share of a typical Irish home's losses — especially in older housing with single or early double glazing. A honeycomb blind fitted tightly and closed at dusk makes a noticeable difference to how a room feels. It won't match the effect of upgrading the glazing itself.

Which blind is best for a conservatory?

Reflective honeycomb pleated blinds on the roof glazing first, then the sides. The roof is where nearly all the heat comes in and goes out; spending the budget on the side glazing first is the common mistake.

Are thermal blinds worth it in a new build?

Less so than in an older house — modern glazing already performs well, so the marginal gain is smaller. They still help with large glazed areas and rooflights, and with comfort right next to the glass.

Should energy-efficient blinds be dark?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. For summer heat, what matters is a reflective backing facing the glass, not a dark face. Light-coloured reflective fabrics keep the room bright and cool at the same time.
