Types of blinds
Twelve products, plainly explained. For each one: what it actually is, the rooms it suits, the rooms it doesn't, what to specify, and a step-by-step fitting guide.
Pick by the problem, not the product
Most people choose a style first and regret it. Work backwards from what the window needs to do and the shortlist gets very short very quickly.
| If your problem is… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Waking at 5am in summer | Blackout roller + side channels | Light comes around the edges, not through the fabric. Channels are the only thing that seals it. |
| Room too hot in July | Solar-reflective roller | A metallised backing reflects heat before it enters. Doesn't need to be dark. |
| Room too cold in winter | Honeycomb pleated | Sealed air cells sit against the glass and slow heat loss both ways. |
| Neighbours can see in | Day & night or venetian | Both give daytime privacy while keeping the room bright. |
| Can't drill (renting) | Perfect fit | Clips into the uPVC gasket. No screws, no holes, no marks. |
| Wide patio door | Vertical blinds | Track-mounted, so they handle widths that make a roller sag. |
| Bathroom or kitchen damp | Aluminium venetian | Unaffected by humidity, and the only blind you can wash flat. |
| Period window, want it to look right | Shutters or wooden blinds | Reads as joinery rather than as something hung in front of the window. |
| Window you can't reach | Electric blinds | A blind that never gets operated is money wasted. |
| Attic or sloped glazing | Roof blinds | Side channels hold the fabric flat against sloped glass. |
