Blinds vs. Shades vs. Shutters: Which is Right for Your Home?
Three words used interchangeably in Irish showrooms that mean three genuinely different products. Here's how to tell which one your window actually needs.
Start with the rule that saves most blinds
Never roll, raise or fold a damp blind. If you take one thing from this, take that.
A rolled damp roller blind will develop a mildew line at the core within weeks and a permanent water mark almost immediately. A raised damp roman blind creases along the rod pockets and never hangs square again. Clean, then leave fully extended until bone dry, even if that's overnight.
Aluminium venetians: the easiest of the lot
Close the slats flat, then wipe both faces with a damp microfibre cloth. Warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid handles kitchen grease fine.
For a blind that's badly greased up over a hob, aluminium is one of the few types you can take down and wash in the bath — lay it flat, wash, rinse, and hang it outside or over the bath to dry completely before rehanging.
A slat duster (the tongs with microfibre sleeves) does both sides at once and is worth the few euro.
Wooden and faux wood: water is the enemy
Real timber blinds should be dusted dry, along the grain, with a microfibre cloth or a soft brush attachment. For marks, use a barely damp cloth and dry immediately behind it.
Do not soak, do not spray, and never put a real wooden blind in water. The timber swells, the finish lifts, and the ladder cords shrink unevenly so the blind hangs crooked forever.
Faux wood is different — it's PVC or composite and tolerates warm soapy water properly. If your blinds are in a kitchen and you can't remember which you bought, check an end slat: real timber shows grain that varies slat to slat.
Roller blinds: down, wipe, leave down
Lower the blind fully. Wipe with a barely damp cloth using mild soap, working top to bottom in overlapping strokes so you don't leave tide marks. Leave fully down until dry.
PVC and polyester-PVC fabrics from bathrooms and kitchens take a proper wipe with warm soapy water. Blackout fabrics with a coated backing should be treated gently — aggressive scrubbing can crack the coating and create pinholes of light.
For stubborn marks, a soft rubber eraser sometimes works where cloth doesn't.
Day and night blinds: vacuum, don't scrub
The alternating sheer stripes are delicate and scrubbing pulls them. Vacuum on the lowest suction with a brush attachment, running along the stripes rather than across them.
Spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth and no soap first. If soap is needed, use very little and rinse with a clean damp cloth after. Leave fully down to dry.
Roman blinds: dry clean, almost always
Vacuum gently with a brush attachment. That's routine maintenance and it's usually enough.
For actual cleaning, check the label and dry clean unless the maker explicitly says otherwise. Washing a roman blind shrinks the fabric around the sewn-in rod pockets at a different rate to the pockets themselves, and the blind will pucker permanently.
If the design allows the rods to be removed and the fabric is confirmed washable, remove every rod, wash cool, and iron while slightly damp before reassembling.
Pleated and honeycomb: air, don't touch
The pleats are creased permanently in manufacture and crushing them is irreversible. Vacuum on the lowest setting with a brush attachment, or use a hairdryer on the cool setting to blow dust out of the honeycomb cells — that works better than it sounds.
Spot-clean very gently. Do not press, iron, or wipe firmly along the pleat lines.
Vertical blinds: unhook and lay flat
Verticals are the best-designed blind for cleaning because each louvre unhooks individually.
Unhook them, lay them flat on a towel, sponge with warm soapy water, rinse, and rehang while very slightly damp so they hang straight as they dry. Do not machine wash unless the supplier explicitly confirms the fabric allows it — most stiffened polyester louvres lose their stiffener in a machine and hang like rags afterwards.
A realistic schedule
Dust or vacuum every blind monthly — five minutes with a vacuum brush across the whole house.
Wipe kitchen and bathroom blinds properly every three months, because grease and moisture build up faster than anywhere else.
Deep clean everything else annually. Check cords, chains and safety devices at the same time — it's the natural moment to notice a frayed cord.

Can I put blinds in the washing machine?
Vertical louvres and some roller fabrics — only if the supplier explicitly confirms it. Never romans, never pleated, never wooden, never venetians. When in doubt, don't: a ruined blind costs far more than a professional clean.
How do I clean blinds above a hob?
Aluminium venetians can be taken down and washed flat, which is the only way to properly shift baked-on grease. This is the main practical argument for fitting aluminium rather than wood in a kitchen.
What removes mould from a bathroom blind?
On PVC fabrics, a dilute solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, wiped on and rinsed off. On fabric blinds, mould usually means the blind needs replacing — and the room needs better ventilation, or it'll happen again.
How often should blinds actually be cleaned?
Monthly dusting, quarterly wiping in wet rooms, annual deep clean elsewhere. Blinds that are dusted regularly almost never need deep cleaning.
